10 High Schools Prep for St. Philip’s College’s Annual Salsa Competition

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, St. Philip’s College Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts department will host culinary teams from 10 area high schools for the Annual Best Tasting Salsa Competition on October 5 in the THCA Building.

Teams from San Antonio -- East Central High School, Legacy of Educational Excellence (LEE) High School, Theodore Roosevelt High School, Madison High School, Southside High School, Douglas MacArthur High School – and surrounding areas -- Sandra Day O'Connor High School (Helotes), Lytle High School, Poteet High School, LaVernia High School are slated to compete in pairs. Winners will earn scholarships to St. Philip’s College to pursue culinary studies.

Originality, creativity, presentation, taste, and texture were among the categories judged by culinary experts. The public is invited to taste students’ creations and cast People’s Choice votes.

Judging begins in Artemisia’s on Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., followed by a public tasting at 11:30 a.m. The awards and recognition portion begins at 12:15 p.m. The THCA building is on-campus, accessible by Montana Street.
