Meet Anthony, he will be receiving an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. After struggling academically in high school, Anthony decided to go straight into the workforce. “I never had the motivation to do well in school. After graduating high school I didn’t have much of an interest in furthering my education,” he said.

For the last 10 years, Anthony has worked for University Health Systems at University Hospital - South Texas Medical Center. He spent six years working in cleaning services and later transferred to the Operating Supply and Inventory Management Department where he has served as an Inventory Management and Control Clerk for the last four years.

Meeting his now-fiancée was a turning point for Anthony as he found inspiration in observing her drive to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. “My fiancée is my role model; she was my biggest support through this. She pushed me to strive for greatness and to develop my skills. Seeing her academic achievements encouraged me to accomplish my own” he said.

Determined, he initially decided to pursue a degree in nursing as he found enjoyment within the hospital environment. However, he quickly realized that a degree in liberal arts aligned more with his goal of becoming a supervisor within the department he currently serves.

Anthony experienced many academic challenges as he navigated and adjusted to college life. He found guidance and support through tutoring services available at St. Philip’s College. “There were moments where I was ready to give up. If it were not for the tutoring I received from MathWorld and the writing center, I would not have completed this degree,” he said.

With a degree in hand, Anthony plans to continue working with University Health Systems and hopes to assume a leadership role. He aspires to obtain a bachelor's and a master’s degree in an area where he can advance his knowledge in business management and administration.
